Islamic marriage apps: what makes an app "halal"?

The word gets used a great deal and defined rarely. Six practical things to ask about instead of taking the label.

Updated 8 September 2026

Many apps describe themselves as "halal". In marketing the word carries no single definition: for one it means a guardian feature exists, for another simply that its users are Muslim.

We are not a body that issues rulings, and we do not label one app permitted and another forbidden — that is a question for scholars. What we can do is turn a vague label into practical questions with yes-or-no answers.

Eight questions worth asking

Our answers are written out plainly. The other column is left to you: ask them, or look through their pages. We do not answer on their behalf.

  1. Is the platform for marriage only, or does it explicitly allow dating?

The first practical difference, and it shows in the front-page headline and in the terms of use.

  2. Does it involve a guardian, or at least encourage involving one?

Some apps have a chaperone feature. Even without one, look at whether the content encourages involving family or working around them.

  3. How does it handle photographs?

Can a woman hide her photos entirely? Can two people get acquainted with no photo at all? The answer matters a great deal.

  4. Does its structure encourage settling or browsing?

Endless scrolling and instant matching are borrowed from dating apps. A small fixed number each day is a different structure, whatever the label says.

  5. What does it publish?

Read its blog. A platform writing "how to tell if he likes you" is addressing a different audience from one writing about the role of a guardian.

  6. What happens to someone who breaks the rules?

Ask support what gets an account closed. A vague answer means the label is marketing.

Platforms named here

We visited the front page of every platform named here, quoted the sentence each uses to describe itself, and recorded the date. We did not copy their prices, because prices change and differ by country. We did not give them ticks and crosses, because we have no way to verify them. What we add is our reading, and we say so.

Muzz

Where Single Muslims Meet for Love & Marriage — join over 20 million single Muslims finding their perfect partner in the halal, free, and fun way.

Quoted from their own site, 8 September 2026

A very large global app, addressing Muslims everywhere in English first, and promising marriage and fun in the same breath.

Salams

Best Rated Muslim Marriage & Friendship App.

Quoted from their own site, 8 September 2026

An app that puts marriage and friendship in the same headline. If you are looking for marriage only, ask how it separates the two.

Half Our Deen

Half Our Deen — a matrimony Muslim website.

Quoted from their own site, 8 September 2026

An explicitly matrimonial site, with no mention of dating or friendship. The closest here to what we do, though its audience is originally American.

Our own answer

Mizan is for marriage only, and using it for dating closes the account. No endless scroll: eleven profiles a day, read slowly. Photos are optional and controlling them is free, and on a free account nobody can write to a woman before she has shown interest in them too. Our editorial content pushes towards involving family early — you can see that in the articles rather than in our self-description. The religious ruling itself is a matter for scholars.
