How to spot a scam profile on a marriage platform

Romance fraud runs to a script. Learn the five stages and you will see it coming long before the money is asked for.

3 minute read

Romance fraud is not as clever as its reputation. It repeats itself, it follows one script almost every time, and anyone who knows the script sees it coming.

We write this as people who read profiles and reports every day, not to frighten you. Most people you meet on a serious platform are exactly who they say they are. The small remainder is worth understanding.

The one script

Nearly every scam moves through the same five stages:

  1. Fast, intense interest. Long, warm messages from day one, and talk of marriage and a shared future before either of you knows anything real about the other.
  2. Pressure to leave the platform. "Send me your number." "Let's talk on WhatsApp." "My account here is about to expire." This is the decisive moment.
  3. A story that explains why you can never meet. Working abroad, constant travel, an illness, the military, an oil rig. The story always exists to explain the absence.
  4. The crisis. After weeks of warmth, a sudden emergency: customs, a hospital, a ticket, a frozen account. The fix is a small amount of money, then a larger one.
  5. The blackmail. If you have sent photos or personal details, warmth turns into a threat.

Learn those five and you learn to stop at the second.

Why leaving the platform is the real danger

Inside a platform, a fraudster leaves traces: an account that was reviewed, messages a human can read when you report, a block that works instantly. Outside it, none of that exists.

That is why Mizan strips phone numbers and links out of messages automatically. The point is not to keep you apart. It is to stop the conversation being moved somewhere unwatched before you know who you are speaking to. Once you are comfortable, the choice is yours.

A practical rule: anyone who pushes hard to move the conversation off the platform in the first few days is showing you something. Not everyone who does it is a fraudster — but every fraudster does it.

Signs in the profile itself

  • One photo, flawless, with no context. Run a reverse image search. Stolen photos surface in seconds.
  • A profile written entirely in generalities. "I love travel, laughter and honesty" says nothing. An honest profile has specifics: a job, a city, a habit, an opinion.
  • Language that does not match the stated country. Obvious machine translation, or a register that does not belong to the place they claim.
  • Refusal to verify. Someone who will not do a simple face check while asking for your complete trust is telling you something.
  • Refusal of a short video call. The excuses accumulate: the camera is broken, the connection is bad, not right now. One short call settles a great deal.

Signs in the conversation

Watch for early questions about your income, your job in detail, or your family's property. Interest in your circumstances is normal at the engagement stage, once the families know one another — not in week one, from a stranger.

Watch also for emotional acceleration. Someone saying "I love you" on the third day does not know you yet. That is not sincerity; it is a tool.

What to do if something feels wrong

  • Never send money. Not for any reason, however convincing. There is no situation in which sending money to someone you have not met is the right call.
  • Never send private photos. Blackmail begins here, and it does not stop at the first payment.
  • Report from inside the conversation. The report reaches us with its context, so we can act faster.
  • Block first, then report. Blocking cuts off access immediately; reporting protects the next person.
  • Tell someone you trust. Fraud relies on your embarrassment. Take it out of silence.

Finally

Caution is not suspicion of people. It means moving slowly through the first steps, involving your family early, and not leaving the platform before you are sure.

Anyone here in good faith will not mind a word of that. Most of them will be relieved.
